Doctor Robert and I first met at an open experimental music jam in Gowanus, Brooklyn and soon decided to begin a collaboration. Heaven Knows began as a moody instrumental by Doctor Robert, and as the song evolved we added sampled elements and experimented with adding my vocals to elevate the impact. We used specific imagery to influence the vibe of the track and particularly the cover art, which we based on renderings of a jet airplay flying through a mountain range. We pictured a sports car cruising at night on a palm tree-lined highway—we wanted Miami Vice.
